Pictures



I don't know if you know this image, but it's Velasquez' Las Hilanderas/The Spinners, painted around 1657.








And this is Paul Strand's Blind (1916). I thought it was interesting because it reminded me that we are not talking about seeing, we are talking about looking, which are apparently two different things. But Strand's photograph is more complicated than a woman who doesn't see, and I think blurs the line between seeing and looking. The label around her neck tells us she cannot see, but the movement of her eyes would suggest she is looking - which of course is different from "not looking," but maybe she isn't looking .....
